Scott Carlson
New Luther College Global Health Major

DRC Sponsor: Jim Morrow

Scott Carlson, Professor of Biology and Global Health Program Director at Luther College, will discuss the new Global Health Major now being offered as part of the Luther curricula. This new course of study was highlighted by noted epidemiologist Dr. Michael Osterholm on October 15th during his feature presentation at the annual Farwell Distinguished Lecture Series.

The growing emphasis on solving global health issues requires an increase in personnel with the necessary educational background and training. The Committee on the U.S. Commitment to Global Health predicted the number of participants in global health work will continue to grow, both in governmental and non-governmental organizations. In recognition of this demand, global health education is expanding beyond the domain of graduate programs in public health and other master's and PhD programs, and is now beginning to enter the undergraduate curriculum.
