Mark Muggli
The Charles Altfillisch Project

DRC Sponsor: John Moeller

Mark Muggli, Chair of the Decorah Historic Preservation Commission and former faculty member at Luther College, will speak to our club about the Charles Altfillisch Project, recognizing the important local legacy of its namesake and ongoing efforts to socialize that legacy.

Charles Altfillisch (1891-1978) was a Decorah City Engineer and architect who came to Decorah in 1919 and designed local buildings until into the 1960s. Some of his most prominent large-scale architectural designs are the West Side School, the Municipal Center and Firehouse, and many buildings at Luther College, including Main III, Valders Hall of Science, and the Tower residence halls. As city engineer, Altfillisch was perhaps the single most important figure in the development of the flood control plan that brought the dike system to Decorah in 1950.
