Before There Were Yearbooks: “Signed” Canes at Luther College
DRC Sponsor: Kim Bonnet
For decades, American students have scrawled their names and best wishes for classmates in yearbooks. But how did students of earlier generations wish their peers a good summer? One answer is carving their names on canes. Join Hayley Jackson, College Archivist Librarian, to talk about and examine a set of such canes from the collection that belonged to Luther College graduates from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Hayley has served as the College Archivist Librarian at Luther College since August 2015. Originally from the western Chicago suburbs, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2015 with an MLIS concentrating on Archival Administration and an MA in History. In her spare time, she serves as a member of the Decorah Historic Preservation Commission and plays viola with the Oneota Valley Community Orchestra.
