DRC Sponsor: Don Holmertz The Rev. Peter R. Kowitz has been pastor of Decorah Lutheran Church since April 1, 2020. He began just as the pandemic was causing churches to close doors and move to online ministry. Half a year later, Decorah Lutheran is perceived to be stronger than ever. Pastor Kowitz will share with you his thoughts on transition, change, conflict, and laughing at yourself along the way. Before entering the ministry, Pastor Kowitz taught music in the public and private schools for over a decade. In 2014 he earned his Master of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC. Among his work activities for Luther's Alumni Services is serving as a contributing editor for the LUTHER Alumni Magazine and being responsible for managing Luther's Distinguished Service Awards, the Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Young Alumni Award. He coordinates various other alumni events year round and manages Luther's LinkedIn sites and the alumni website. Kirk graduated from Luther in 1982 and joined the admissions staff in 1984. Learning from the 2020 Presidential Election

DRC Sponsor: Alan Lerstrom You have probably heard a lot of noise about America’s 2020 presidential election, from all sides. In this talk, Paul Gardner, Emeritus Professor of Political Science at Luther College, will help us get below the noise so we can reflect a bit about what the election of 2020 teaches us about America. Dr. Gardner retired from Luther College in 2018 after 35 years teaching Political Science. Among his favorite courses were seminars on the 2008, 2012, and 2016 American presidential elections. Not quite ready to lay down his chalk, he spent Spring 2020 in Romania as a Fulbright Scholar teaching about the 2020 election. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Kentucky, an MA in Political Science from Iowa State University, and a BA in Sociology from St. Ambrose University. Carlson Park Development Status and Plans

DRC Sponsor: Ward Budweg The Director of the Decorah Parks and Recreation Department (DPR) Andy Nimrod, along with DPR Board Member Brian Fuhrmann, will be on hand to discuss the development plans and status of Carlson Park, the most recent addition to the Decorah Park System. Andy and Brian will also itemize DPR's winter recreation opportunities available to the community. The 110 acres of wooded property supporting Carlson Park was gifted to the Decorah Park System by the families of Rick and David Carlson. Public access to the park is located adjacent to St. Benedict Cemetery on Pleasant Avenue heading south towards the Fish Hatchery. Several multi-use and cross-country ski trails are already established and in use. The designated Outer Loop Trail is nearly two miles in length. DPR is constantly working to improve all of the parks comprising the Decorah Park System. Northeast Iowa Community College - President's Update

DRC Sponsor: Shannon Duncan DRC member and Northeast Iowa Community College President Dr. Liang Chee Wee will provide our club with an update on the programs associated with the college, as well as insight into his future personal plans. Dr. Wee has served as NICC President since 2012 and prior as the Calmar Campus Provost starting in 2007. Before his arrival at NICC, he worked at Luther College for 15 years, first teaching in the Department of Economics and Business, then serving as Chair of the department. In 2001, he accepted the position of Associate Dean for Advising and Special Programs and Registrar. Luther College Economic Impact on Decorah

DCR Sponsor: John Moeller Steve Holland, Professor of Economics at Luther College, will summarize recent research examining the economic impact Luther College has on the city of Decorah. Dr. Holland has been a professor in the Economics, Accounting, and Management Department since 2005, focusing on the topics of microeconomics, environmental economics, and public policy. Dr. Holland holds a Ph.D. in Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota, as well as a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center. Polashek's Locker Service: The Family Business

DRC Sponsor: Kim Bonnet Adam Polashek will be discussing his family business, Polashek's Locker Service. His presentation will be done via Zoom in order to support a virtual tour of the facility. Polashek's Locker Service, Inc. was founded in 1983 by Paul and Judy Polashek. They celebrated 35 years in the meat business in 2018 and continue to offer award winning meats and customer service. They offer custom beef, pork and venison processing and have a full case of fresh and frozen meat, homemade products, cheese, and deli products. They also supply meats to local area grocery stores. In 2013 their business was featured on the Travel Channel program Bizarre Foods, hosted by Andrew Zimmern. In this particular episode, the crew observed the production and participated in the sampling of jaternice, pickled pork hocks, pickled beef tripe, and head cheese. The Luther College Football Program

DRC Sponsor: Kim Bonnet Caleb Padilla, Head Football Coach at Luther College, will join our club to offer his observations and expectations for the Luther football program and his outlook for the coming season. In December 2017, the Luther College Director of Athletics promoted Coach Padilla to his present position as Head Coach after having served as Defensive Coordinator for the Norse over the prior three years. A native of West Liberty, Iowa, Coach Padilla has served as an assistant at the high school, NCAA Division II and Division III levels. He joined the Norse staff in 2015 as Defensive Coordinator from Division II Notre Dame College in South Euclid, OH where he served in the same role for two years. His coaching resume also includes two years as Defensive Coordinator at Albion College, Albion, Michigan, (2010-12); Outside Linebackers Coach at Colorado School of Mines (2008-09); and two years as the varsity Defensive Backs Coach and junior varsity Defensive Coordinator at Rangeview High School, Aurora, Colorado (2006-07). While at Winona State University, MN from 2001-2005 he was a member of the Warriors football team that captured four Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. Project Linus

DRC Sponsor: Kim Bonnet Elise Harless is a real estate agent with Harmon Realty. She also serves as Chapter Coordinator of the nonprofit organization Project Linus - Northeast Iowa. Elise will be sharing information with us on this noteworthy organization and the important service it provides. Project Linus provides new hand made blankets to children in need. The blankets are lovingly made by adults and children from all walks of life and acquired from many different sources. With chapters in all 50 states, blankets from Project Linus are collected locally and distributed to children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, or anywhere that a child might be in need of a big hug. Elise grew up in Lake Mills, Iowa and moved to Decorah in 2008 to attend Luther College. At Luther she studied Business Management and Communications Studies. While in school she met her husband, Nick. They now live in Decorah with their 3 dogs. She received her Iowa real estate license in 2019. Municipal Electrical Utility (MEU) Task Force Update

DRC Sponsor: Jim Morrow Karen McLean, retired Des Moines University Provost and Mark Lovelace, Managing Partner at A&J Petersburg, are members on the Decorah Municipal Electrical Utility (MEU) Task Force, having been appointed along with seven other local citizens by the City of Decorah this past December. Karen and Mark will be sharing information with our members about the Decorah MEU Task Force -- how it came about, what has happened since its establishment, and future outcome scenarios. The duties and responsibilities of the MEU Task Force are as follows: (1) conducting a series of learning opportunities for the task force and the public about the advantages/disadvantages of forming a municipal electric utility in Decorah and to conduct them in various venues and via different means (in-person meetings, online webinars, etc.); (2) convening meetings with key stakeholders (large customers, senior citizens, downtown businesses, Freeport residents and businesses, City leaders/employees, etc.) to identify and address concerns; (3) responding to the recent invitation by the Iowa Utilities Board “to bring specific issues regarding a municipalization process before the Board . . .through the Board’s complaint procedures in accordance with Iowa Code § 476.3.”; (4) commissioning an MEU feasibility study to be completed by Fall 2021, or advise an alternative approach that may include updating the current feasibility study or holding a referendum prior to doing any additional studies; and (5) providing a recommendation to the City Council about whether and when to hold a second referendum about establishing a MEU.
